Brown County History

In 1877, a first settlement appeared along the James River.  Columbia, involved in a contest with Ordway, and later with Aberdeen for the county seat, now boasts the oldest continuous post office in the country.

The county was named for a legislator, Alfred Brown, of Hutchinson County, who was instrumental in getting the various counties delineated and organized.
