The Vietnam War era will come to Brookings this summer with the arrival of "The Wall That Heals," a three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Included is the mobile museum, where "kids and adults get to learn really what happened during the Vietnam War and all the different aspects of that."
Brookings is one of only 30 communities that will host the exhibit in 2026, the first time in more than 10 years, and the only community in South Dakota that will host it in 2026.
The exhibit will have a screen that will scroll and highlight the names and photos of people from the Brookings area who served in Vietnam and have since died.
"The Wall That Heals" is erected in a chevron-shape, and visitors can do name rubbings of individual service member's name on The Wall. The replica is constructed of Avonite, a synthetic granite, and its 140 numbered panels are supported by an aluminum frame. The three-quarter scale replica is 375 feet in length and rises to a height of 7.5 feet at its tallest point.
Open 24 hours a day.
