At about the time the India, the trapper and the hunter withdrew from the Clark County area in 1879, the homesteaders began to arrive. The first post office was established at Bailey Lake in 1878. Clark County was organized in 1881 and named for a legislator as was the county seat. Two notables from Clark County are Governor Sam Elrod and Honorable Carl Sherwood. Main industries of the county are general farming and McCain Foods, a potato processing company (now closed.)
