The Great Lakes Region
When Lewis and Clark traveled the Missouri River back in 1804, it was as winding, shallow waterway. Today, the river has been dammed to create four massive reservoirs, South Dakota's Great Lakes. Eagles, pronghorn and private prairie dogs play along the river's banks, while outdoor enthusiasts enjoy fishing, hunting, boating, camping and a host of activities. Follow the river's path for a taste of regional history. It flows past historic sites, scenic byways, American Indian reservations, and small towns with Old West roots.
