Deadwood for state-wide meetings.  The Northwest Sportshow could have been a little busier but thanks to everyone that attended the show.  We will be drawing later this week for our Pheasant Hunt and Weekend Giveaways from the sportshows we've attended.  So if you've registered this winter, good luck, and we will be notifying the winner later this week.     While out in the Black Hills, we new facilities at the Deadwood Mountain Grand Casino.  Lots of great entertainment coming there this summer.     If you're planning your trip be sure to request our Northeast Regional Guide, we've got time to break out the classic movies and that new puzzle you got for Christmas.  And better yet, start planning your summer vacation.    State Park Campground reservations are starting up...remember you can reserve at our State Parks up to 90 days in advance, so planning ahead for the weekends as much as possible is always better.  After visiting with some folks south of us this past week, on the perspective I think.     Another suggestion for you, remember to follow us on facebook, and tell your friends as well.  We'll have more travel giveaways coming up, and over the summer season, we award towards their home town.  This also was emphasized by the guest speaker, who talked about the importance of Investing in your Life, Investing in your work, and Investing in your Community.   It was a wonderful evening, and a pleasant reminder of depending upon how you live your life, what a gift a person can be towards those around them.    "Practice the Vacation Principle.  Regard your life as an family and friends to do the same.  I purchased some Christmas gifts at a couple of locally owned shops this past weekend in Watertown.  It's fun to give and receive, something unique, that no one else has.  We like our local shops to be there year-round, and now is the best time of year to support them.     A wonderful annual event is coming up next weekend.  The Fort Sisseton Frontier Christmas at Fort Sisseton State Park near Lake City, will be held December 10th, from 10am-5pm.  Tour the historical buildings and museum, catch a sleigh ride, spend time making holiday crafts, enjoy traditional Christmas music, and learn about the traditional trade of spinning and weaving.  Take part in lighting the Christmas tree at 4pm.  For more information contact Fort Sisseton State Park @ owned stores, and spend your holiday cash where it will have a ripple effect in your community, your region.  I shopped local this past weekend in De Smet at their local craft show, and at Cheryl's in Uptown Watertown.  I've also purchased gifts this holiday season at Doubletree Gallery in Sisseton, Uniquely You'res in Faulkton, at Obsessions in Brookings, and at a local vendor show in Watertown. daily highs in the mid to upper 40s, and mostly sunny skies.  Not bad at all as we approach mid-November.  It's a great time of year to be out and about and enjoy the fall weather.  I know I've had friends put up their Christmas lights already, and although I do luv the holidays, I could go for a few more weeks of mid to upper 40s and no snow.     Pheasant hunting season is still well underway. fishermen, retreats, weddings, groups, family reunions.  Several bedrooms, and a main hall that seats around 100 for an event.  Beautiful location, if you're looking for a place to meat for your spent, teaching and helping young people learn about the great outdoors in South Dakota.  Young people are our future hunters and fishermen, and future campers.  If you get the opportunity this fall, Clark in the life section with some great tips for your summer travel.  Things you can do to save a little extra money, so that the higher gas prices don't stall your vacation plans.   Here are some of her suggestions:  "Before you go:  Plot the most efficient route to your destination.  Get a tune-up on your vehicle.  Utilize and pre-book your vacation packages or reservations to guarantee your price.  Consider redeeming loyalty rewards points.  Look into close-to-home destinations that offer a variety of options.  "On the road:  Slow down for greater fuel efficiency.  Making fast stops and starts wastes fuel.  Use your smartphone to locate the best gas prices.  Drive during off-peak times to avoid traffic jams.  Take the most fuel-efficient vehicle you own on vacation.  Watch for hotel and destination promotions."  If you're from the Upper Midwest, South Dakota offers a variety of options for your summer vacation, and we're located right in your backyard.   South Dakota is a trip of a lifetime for many families.  And our region also makes for a great weekend getaway for folks who life affordable family attractions, camping, fishing, and great events.  My advice is to maybe skip a couple of days eating out one week, maybe I'll give up a golf outing or two, but I won't let the price of gas keep me from taking my summer vacation.  Everyone needs some time to just getaway.  A good informational site I found is http://www.fuelgaugereport.com  It can help you figure your costs for traveling.  The way I figure for an 800 mile trip, at a dollar more a gallon thanlast year, with a vehicle getting 20 miles/gallon....the trip will got you $40 more than a year ago.  Still affordable for one's summer travel plans.  For more trip planner ideas, and fuel facts, you can also check out Dakota's Great Places News Release by SD Tourism:PIERRE, S.D. – Some of South Dakota’s Great Places are along the birding trail in northeast South Dakota. The 38 trail sites are home to more than 300 species of birds.(This region is known to be one of the most productive waterfowl breeding areas in North America. The rivers, streams and lakes in the area provide hundreds of miles of shoreline. In these types of habitats songbirds, marsh birds and shorebirds are common. Rare grassland habitat is also prevalently found in the area because of the tall and mixed grasses. The Glacial Lakes & Prairies Birding Trail brochure describes each of 38 sites with several categories for the birder’s convenience. Categories include what the habitat is, which birds to look for, tips and insider information, best birding months and contact information. A free copy of the Glacial Lakes & Prairies Birding Trail brochure can be obtained by calling 1-800-244-8860. An online copy of the birding guide can be viewed here: http://gfp.sd.gov/wildlife/docs/glacial-lakes-birding.pdf.   Here are a few reminders before you head out birding. Take caution and slow down when driving on gravel roads in wet and snowy conditions. In many areas, it is recommended that you walk rather than attempt to drive on rough roads, so watch for “No vehicles beyond this point” signs. While there is an abundance of public land in northeast South Dakota, continue to be considerate and respectful of other birders, hunters or photographers. )Peace and Safe Travels!-Rosie;)April 26th,
