Fishing Reports

UPDATED: May 13th
Regional Fishing Update:  With the late winter storms in April, we're off to a little slower spring fishing season across the northern tier of our region, while Lake Thompson, Poinsett, etc... have been open for over a month.  With the wind and rain the last few days, all lakes are now open.

Area forecast:  Temperatures will be in the upper 60s starting on Wednesday through the weekend.  Chance of rain Tuesday, and again on Monday, with temperatures back in the low 60s starting on Sunday and into next week.

Over the last week the walleye bite was slowly improving.  Wednesday evening there were a few caught and by Friday there were multiple reports of walleyes being caught off docks and lindy rigging in 9 feet of water.  The average weight has been at the 2 pound mark with an occasional fish over 20 inches.  All this was taking place in the early evening until just after dark.  Water temps were hovering in the 50 degree mark. One angler reported netting a 26 inch walleye off his dock!  Good job!  There were even some reports of northern being netted by dock fishermen in the Bay View area.

Unfortunately Saturday brought over an inch of rain to the area with winds gusting over 40 mph.  This kept many indoors.  Sunday broke into a beautiful day and the anglers hit the water early.  The water clarity was amazing after so much wind and this hampered the bite. However as water temps continue to climb with abundant sunshine we should see a repeat of last week.

South Dakota's free fishing weekend is May 16, 17 and 18th...a great time to get out and set the hook on Big Stone Lake.
